Atunwa Charges Lawmakers On Masses Driven Debates

Following the unveiling of the Eighth Assembly Legislative Agenda by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, a former Speaker of the Kwara Assembly and lawmaker representing Asa/Ilorin West Federal Constituency, Barr. Razak Atunwa has called on lawmakers of the Eighth Assembly to resolutely commit themselves to masses driven debates in ensuring productivity and steering development in the nation.

Assessing the extent of damages done to the Nigerian society by the previous administration, Barr. Atunwa said it is imperative for lawmakers of the Eighth Assembly to prudently utilize the opportunity of each sitting to articulate the interests of the populace. Atunwa made this known in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media, Olawale Rotimi, ahead of debates on salient issues of national interest outlined in the House’s Legislative Agenda.

The Legislative Agenda for the Eighth Assembly touch on public demands for transparency and accountability, introduction of a robust Code of Conduct for Members to ensure zero tolerance for corruption, establishment Parliamentary Information Centre to increase citizens access to authentic documents from parliament, legislative action to promote rapid economic growth, reduce unemployment, stop leakages and mismanagement, legislative measures to help tackle insecurity, alleviation of poverty, improvement in Education and Agriculture and legislative timetable to fully debate various sectors of the National Economy to as to postulate way forward.

“It’s impressive that the Agenda present pressing matters with sufficient national configuration; this is the foundation of the Eighth Assembly and it very important we establish a solid ground for legislative activities to strive in coming months, this cannot be over emphasized and every lawmaker should maximize it to ensure that Nigerians know and feel the impact of legislative activities on key economic and public-policy issues, and to recognize that our lawmakers understand the importance of a vibrant economy and secured environment for all Nigerians” Atunwa stated.

Further speaking, Barr. Atunwa said “dynamics of pressing issues in the Nigerian society today demand a vibrant legislative and unhindered relationship between people and their elected representatives. Our large, growing and diverse population requires improvement in the outcome of legislative debates in a way that it will ameliorate the status of our economy and social matters. I urge all lawmakers to make use of modern technology to interact with their constituents and base debates in the floor of the House on the demands of the people.”

Atunwa commended the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara for the comprehensive Agenda set for the Eighth Assembly. He expressed optimism that the Agenda set will generate outcomes that will meet with the demands of Nigerians.
