The members of the #National Council on Privatization (#NPC) have recently held a #valedictory session for their Chairman, #Vice President #Mohammed Namadi Sambo where they extolled his exemplary leadership qualities, noting that it has tremendously improved the performance of the council.
The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Benjamin Dikki, who spoke on behalf of the council said that they came to express their gratitude to the Vice #President for his stewarding the National Privatization Council over the past five years, indicating that it has recorded tremendous achievements.
According to him, it was during the Vice President’s tenure that the power sector was successfully unbundled and handed over to the private sector, thereby reducing the burden of investments by government in the power sector.
“We reviewed some of the achievements that have been attained during your tenure as NCP Chairman. We looked at the privatization of the power sector and all the challenges and because of your political commitment and that of the President, we were able to overcome such challenges,” he said.
Benjamin Dikki added that it was during the tenure of the Vice President that an innovation, the project advisory approach was adopted which catered for the substitution of consultants with the inter-agency project delivery team.
He added that within the government skilled resources were pooled to undertake the reforms; noting that such reforms are being replicated in other critical sectors of the economy, thereby cutting cost through reliance on internal expertise.
Nigeria’s Vice President, Namadi Sambo in his remarks inferred that after a review of the operations of the National Council on Privatization, tremendous improvement in the activities of the council was realised.
He expressed fulfillment that within during his tenure, the council was able to achieve a lot.
“There is no doubt that the achievements we have witnessed in different sectors of the privatization exercise are enormous. I think that two out of the whole – the power sector and the NITEL/MTEL privatizations stand out,” he pointed.
He further praised the efforts and actions of the council which led to successful privation of both NITEL/MTEL and the power sector, indicating that it was a pride not only for Nigeria; but for the continent of Africa.
Mohammed Namadi Sambo hinted that though there might be lack of information on some of the privatization processes, all decisions taken were based on sound professional advice and have brought success to the privatization exercise.
He commended the Bureau for the tremendous improvement it has recorded, urging the management to continue in that direction.
“I am looking forward to extending the same experience and support to the incoming government to ensure that we succeed in this privatization venture and ultimately to contribute positively towards the progress and development of our great country,” he stated.
Sambo expressed gratitude to NPC and BPE for the support offered to him during his stewardship.
