Catholic Daily Reflections: Friday of the 13th Week in Ordinary Time

? GENESIS 23: 1-4. 19; 24
MATTHEW 9: 9-13

Today’s Gospel reading features the call of Matthew the tax collector. Jesus called Matthew thereby lifting him from the low state to a great height.

When the Pharisees complained that Jesus was eating with tax collectors and sinners, Jesus said: “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” (Mt 9:12)

The call of Matthew who was a tax collector to be a great disciple of Jesus simply reminds us that Jesus is a true and great physician of our soul.

He is ever ready to stoop low to our state in order to lift us up to greater height. He came to call sinners to repentance, and that made Him to search for sinners.

No matter the state of our sinfulness, all we need do is to listen to the voice of the Lord who calls us to come back to Him with a repentant heart.

Let us earnestly pray this day for a deeper longing for the Lord who awaits our return to him whenever we derail.
