#President Muhammadu Buhari may have been able to justify his position as the number one citizen of the country having been able to avoid controversies in his three weeks reign at the top, but this cannot be said of his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress, which has been tearing itself apart ever since the new democratic era began on May 29, 2015.
The #APC has refused to learn from the errors of the #Peoples Democratic Party and it is not surprising that the PDP now believes that they can reclaim the presidency during the 2019 presidential election. Following their disastrous showing during the National Assembly elections few weeks ago, everybody had thought that the APC would have work out modalities to remedy the situation in order to avoid future occurrence; but, it appears we were all wrong.
The APC is once again in trouble, and even though people are optimistic that the party will not disintegrate, one wonders when the crisis rocking the party will eventually come to an end. The latest crisis is being fueled by the disagreement within the party over the sharing of principal offices in the Senate; namely, the Senate Leader, the Deputy Senate Leader, the Chief Whip and the Deputy Chief Whip.
According to The Punch, it is believed that the #President of the Senate, #Bukola Saraki, have recommended to the APC National Working Committee that the positions be allocated to the zones, but some leaders of the party, especially those from the South-West, want them filled by the party’s hierarchy.
A Senator from the North-Central, who is loyal to Saraki, confirmed the development on condition of anonymity. He said, “By the Senate tradition, the party in majority normally sends the offices to the zones where the Senate caucuses would meet and choose among themselves in the zone, who occupies the offices.
“Some other leaders of the party are claiming that asking the party to produce the principal officers was a smart way to impose the Senate Leader, the Deputy Senate Leader, the Chief Whip and the Deputy Chief Whip on the Senate.”
The senator claimed that a “very influential leader of the party from the South-West had allegedly written Odigie- Oyegun that the leaders would fill the positions.”
#Spokesperson for the Senate Unity Forum, a group of senators loyal to Lawan, #Kabir Marafa, argued that the choice of other principal officers who are not elected on the floor of the Senate, remained the sole business of the party leadership.
He said, “How can the executive of the party at the zonal levels determine who will be made the Senate Leader, the Deputy Senate Leader, the Chief Whip and the Deputy Chief Whip?
“It is the party executive that would determine all these. So the party would write the Senate President. That is the tradition. It cannot be done at the zonal level, it is absurd. There should be due process in whatever things we do.”
From the #latest crisis within the APC, it appears the party is not ready to rule the nation without finding itself involved in one crisis or another. These incessant crisis may be serving as encouraging sighs to the opposition party, #PDP, who must be plotting now great avenues to capitalize on them.
