TODAYS REFLECTION, 15TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME MON JUL 17 (Ex 1:8-14, 22, Mt 10 : 34-11:1)
ARE YOU FOR THE SWORD OR THE LOVE OF GOD AND PEACE.
In todays gospel, many are surprised and ask, Does Jesus really want to bring the “sword” and division rather than peace? Actually, He was speaking about one of the effects of the Truth. The Truth of the Gospel has the power to deeply unite us to God when we fully accept it as the Word of Truth. But another effect is that it divides us from those who refuse to be united to God in the Truth.
The gospel also reminds us that to be disciples of Jesus, we must love Jesus more than we love our fathers, mothers, sons, or daughters (Mt 10:37). This means that to be disciples, we must do something which is almost unthinkable, to deny our very selves (Lk 9:23), lose ourselves, bring ourselves “to nought” for Jesus (Mt 10:39). To some this is impossible. But hence the Lord proved His love for us by dying on the cross (Rm 5:8). The love of Christ crucified is the only key which can unlock our prisons of selfishness and be willing to do as he has done.
Finally friends, we see that true love for God compels us to express charity towards our neighbour who is created in the image and likeness of God. Jesus declared that any kindness shown and any help given to the people of Christ will not go unrewarded. Jesus never refused to give to anyone in need who asked for his help. As his disciples we are called to be kind and generous as He is. WISHING YOU A BLESSED WEEK BE BLESSED.
