The honorable commissioner for agriculture and natural resources in Edo state Hon. Prince Joe Okojie finally unveils his successes/ achievements within the few months of his administration as well as further plans towards agro-investment boost in the state. However, these were made public via a brochure he tagged
“Edo State Agriculture in focus”
It is a known fact that Edo state has experienced developmental revolution in all sectors, credit for this achievement can be given first and foremost to the Governor, Comrade Adams Aliyu Eric Oshiomhole then through the flow chat of Governmental hierarchy and down to the people of Edo State who have time and again shown their love and support toward the development of Edo state.
The state has a great foothold and veritable attraction for private sector investment in agriculture with a large cultivable land mass of over 1.1 million hectares.
Edo state government has reaffirmed the State’s commitment to the development of agribusiness especially at a time when it has become imperative to boost domestic economic activities to mitigate the impact of the declining proceeds from oil related revenues and the consequent resource allocation from the Federal Government by formalising an incentive scheme to realise the potential of the state in agricultural production.
To achieve agri-business investment boost in the state, the government has come up with new agricultural policy direction thus:
• Premium assessed on Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) be computed but waived as an incentive to investors in farming activities in Edo State.
• That moratorium be granted on Land Use Charge for farm lands developed for crop production as follows:
o Seasonal crops: A moratorium of One Year for land developed for the cultivation of all seasonal crops.
o Perennial crops except for Rubber: Moratorium of 2 years on payment of Land Use Charge.
o Rubber: Moratorium of 3 years.
• In cases of existing farmers in the area to be acquired by government, an alternative land measuring at a minimum, twice the one previously held, be offered for relocation of farmers under the out-growers’ scheme
• Agricultural banks to be created by the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources
Agriculture is the easiest way to create wealth anywhere. Here in Edo state, we are focused on going beyond food security, our aim is to exploit the export market.
Our investor-friendly-policies, hopefully will boost the production capabilities of our old and new investors, small and large scale towards actualizing these set goals in a short period of time.
Our vision is for Edo State to become a leading agribusiness hub in West-Africa, attracting world’s biggest agro-investors, translating the state into a world of Agro-Industrialization.
HON. PRINCE JOE OKOJIE
Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources
Edo State of Nigeria
