The #All Progressives Congress may have gained the upper hand during the March and April general elections in the country, but fresh facts from their handling of leadership positions point to the fact that they are either naïve or not ready to learn from the errors of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The much anticipated consensus brokering senate presidential candidate meeting for the #eighth National Assembly between the National Working Committee (NWC) of the #APC and the party’s senators-elect failed to hold on Thursday June 4th, 2015.
The decision by the APC NWC to shelve plans of ironing out the issue of who emerges consensus senate presidential candidate does not portray good signs for the party, considering the fact that the eighth National Assembly will be inaugurated next week.
Investigations by Newsbeatportal point to the fact that the APC had to cancel the meeting to avoid a full blown crisis that had been gathering momentum following the in ability of the party’s two Senatorial #president contenders to be civilized.
It was learnt that the party’s national working committee hurriedly called off the meeting after receiving intelligence report that the APC legislators-elect were spoiling for a fight, The Punch reported.
A senator-elect said, “Some of us were at the International Conference Centre, venue of the proposed meeting here (Abuja) as early as 7am waiting for our party leaders when some of our colleagues, mainly from the lower chamber arrived.
“The atmosphere became charged as the members-elect were discussing aloud and threatening to create a stalemate in case there is any move by the leadership to introduce the issue of consensus candidates for the leadership positions in the two chambers.
“It was when the situation was getting out of hand that we got a message that the meeting had been cancelled by the party’s leadership.”
Reacting to the report above, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed, said: “When we fixed the meeting, we were unaware that the Senate would be holding its valedictory service today(Thursday). The meeting has therefore been rescheduled for Saturday.”
