N'Assembly: APC Crisis Deepens As Saraki & Dogora Vow To Contest Tuesday's Elections

The downfall of the began when the G-5 governors left the party and pitched their tents with the ; the crisis worsened when former Goodluck Jonathan was made the sole candidate for the party during its primaries. This move aggravated the grievances of the governors to the extent that the PDP was completely dismantled from the presidency and became the minority in the National Assembly.

The trend in the ruling for few weeks now is similar with the internal lingering crisis tormenting the party reaching its apex when the two candidates who lost the party’s mock primaries for the National Assembly leadership, Senator Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives member: Yakubu Dogora, vowed to context Tuesday’s election. While the APC announced Senator Lawan as its official candidate for the Senate presidency election, emerged as the party’s consensus candidate for the House of Representatives Speaker election.

Findings in Abuja on Sunday showed that the candidates – Yakubu Dogara (House of Representatives) and Bukola Saraki (Senate) had intensified lobbying the Peoples Democratic Party incoming lawmakers, The Punch reported. However, this approach may be unlikely successful considering the fact that the PDP lawmakers will be seeking to profit from this discord in the camp of the APC.

Speaking on the outcome of the mock election conducted by the APC on Saturday, the spokesperson for the 8th Assembly Consolidation Group which is Dogara’s campaign body, , noted that the election was a scam. “The mock election is a blatant lie. It was very shameful and disgraceful and the party only made a mockery of itself”, he said.

“We walked out of the hall and we never participated in the election. Therefore, the votes allocated to us were a fraud and we will not accept them,” he added.

Jibrin claimed that members of the group had received threats of disciplinary actions from the party since Saturday, but he restated the resolve of Dogara’s supporters to ignore the APC and nominate him(Dogora) for Tuesday’s (tomorrow) election.

It is worth noting here that those who have played deaf ears to the lingering crisis and equally downplayed the whole power tussle all along are now in severe shock knowing full well that the Peoples Democratic Party must capitalize on these internal loopholes of the ruling APC. For, as it stands now, the opposition PDP is now favourite to sweep both the Senate President post and that of the House of Representatives Speaker.

Meanwhile, senators-elect and their counterparts for the House began accreditation for the Tuesday election at the National Assembly in Abuja on Sunday.
