People are meant to learn from their past mistakes and work towards avoiding them in the future. The Peoples Democratic Party made a great mistake by losing the presidency and becoming a minority in the National Assembly; a mistake that was so glaring that it was often suggested that the party was heading towards extinction. But, could the #PDP have learnt their lessons?
The members of the #house of representatives on Tuesday June 9, 2015, elected Mr Yakubu Dogara of the All Progressives Congress, as the speaker of the Eighth National Assembly. In a keenly contested outcome, Dogara, backed by the PDP house of Representatives members and few of his supporters, defeated Mr #Femi Gbajabiamila by 182 votes to 174 votes.
The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party sensationally announced on Tuesday morning that the party had adopted Mr Yakubu Dogara as the party’s preferred candidate for the house of representatives speaker position. The party, thus, urged her lawmakers to vote for its candidates as directed; a directives its members fully complied with and which has now led to Dogara emerging speaker of the house of representatives.
It is worth noting here that the victory recorded by Yakubu Dogara confirmed the report we posted on Tuesday morning, where we reported that Senator Bukola Saraki and Mr. Yakubu Dogara would emerge Senate president and speaker of the house of representatives respectively.
We based our projections on the circumstances surrounding the mock elections conducted by the leadership of #APC that led to Mr Femi Gbajabiamila being declared winner of the election and subsequently announced as the party’s candidate for the #house of representatives speaker election.
With this stunt pulled by the minority Peoples Democratic Party, the debate of whether the PDP is either a dead party heading for extinction or muster a tough opposition for the ruling APC at the executive has again been brought to limelight.
