The Peoples Democratic may have been severely wounded during the March and April, 2015 general elections in the country, but all those who have ever doubted their relevance and undermined their opposition minority status have been bitterly dealt a terrible blow.
The #PDP, through her senators on the floor of the National Assembly on Tuesday June 9, 2015, demonstrated the strength that once made them the largest political party in Africa when their adopted candidate for the senate presidency election of the Eighth Assembly emerged unopposed to lead the house.
Their adopted candidate, the former governor of Kwara #State, #Senator Bukola Saraki, who served under the Peoples Democratic Party but later defected to team up with the ruling All Progressives Congress has been given the mandate to lead the upper legislative chamber for the next four years.
Mr. Saraki of the All Progressives Congress, #APC, who defeated his party’s preferred candidate, Ahmed Lawan, to emerge the #Senate president, was nominated by Sani Yerima and seconded by Dino Melaye.
He was then elected unopposed as #President of 8th Senate by 57 of 108 senators, with 51 senators, including Senator Ahmed Lawan, absent.
The other senators were meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the International Conference Centre at the time Saraki was declared President.
The election of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President of the 8th National Assembly has now confirmed the story we reported earlier today where we confidently projected that Senator Bukola Saraki of the All Progressives Congress was going to be elected Senate President.
Meanwhile, ruling along the elected senate president is Senator Ike Ekweremandu of the Peoples Democratic Party, who emerged as the deputy senate president of the 8th National Assembly.
The immediate Deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu defeated Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume as he scored 54 votes against Ndume’s 20 votes, with VANGUARD reporting that 75 Senators-elect participated in the election and there was one voided vote.
