La Liga Santander is going to bid 2017 goodbye in a grand style, with a Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona. There will be a charade of stars on show, but without a doubt it’s the battle between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi which symbolises this game. This is a game that is just more than a game and football lovers all over the world are surely expecting a show piece as usual like the former El Classicos.
If the rivalry between CR7 and D10S has a worldwide dimension, it’s because they compete on all fronts for all awards, from the battles between their respective clubs, to top scorer awards and the Ballon d’Or.
In the personal battle, both have dominated the European Golden Shoe and the Ballon d’Or. They won one each, this year, with Messi taking the former and Ronaldo the latter. There is even a saying that the last human to have ever won the Ballion d’Or was Kaka. That sounds hilarious and we could attest to that. This points to the fact that Ronaldo and Messi can be classified as astronomical “beings” or what it is known as ” demigods” in football. You could say Ronaldo is Achilles while Messi is Hercules. I hope my analysis could be taken with a pinch of salt..
The fight for accolades and recognition continues at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, where both have a new challenge: to end the calendar year as the top scorer in Europe for 2017.
At the moment, Messi and Ronaldo top the highest scorers along with Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski. All three have scored a total of 53 goals, counting strikes for both clubs and countries.
And all three have a remaining game for this year, the Clasico for both Cristiano and Leo, and Borussia Dortmund for Bayern’s Polish striker.
Close behind that trio of attackers is Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani (52 goals) and Tottenham’s Harry Kane (50 goals). Cavani has one game left, against Caen and Kane has two: Burnley (Dec. 23) and Southampton (Dec. 26).
Anyone of those five red-hot forwards could have the honour of closing 2017 as the year’s top scorer, but the fact that Ronaldo and Messi’s options come down to the same game is an added Clasico bonus.
A look at the statistics for 2017 shows that Ronaldo has been much more effective in the Champions League (19 goals) and with Portugal (11 goals) than in La Liga. In La Liga this season he has four goals in 11 appearances (19 goals in La Liga in 2017).
LIGA OR CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
In contrast, Messi has scored more in La Liga, winning the European Golden Shoe and currently leading the Pichichi with 14 goals. There could have been many more, too, because the Argentine has hit the woodwork 14 times.
So lets just fold our hands, cross our legs and wait for Saturday..
Conversation with Christiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo feels he has succeeded in making his mark in football and is honoured to compete with the likes of Lionel Messi for the sport’s biggest individual prizes.
Ronaldo earned The Best FIFA Men’s Player award for the second time in October, and retained the prestigious Ballon d’Or this month to join Messi on five titles.
In an interview with FIFA website, the Real Madrid star expressed his satisfaction at spending so long as one of the game’s top talents.
“It’s priceless for me to be here once more, because I’m doing things right in my club and my team,” he said.
“I’ve always wanted to make my mark in the world of football, and I’ve done it, I’ve written a chapter in the history of football [by] winning so many titles, being a player, like Messi, a candidate to win individual prizes.
“It’s a great honour, an incredible moment in my career. It motivates me to continue playing football.
“I stay motivated because I like what I do, I love playing football and I try to enjoy it, but what I try the most is to make people and my team-mates enjoy it.
“I will continue while I have this passion for playing football, which is what I like the most.”
Ronaldo has won lots of accolades including the Premier League (three times), LaLiga (twice) and the Champions League (four occasions).
But the most satisfying title that has brought the 32-year-old the most joy was lifting last year’s European championship with his country Portugal.
“Winning the Euro was the most [special], it’s something we wanted for years, the first title of the Portuguese national team, and that’s why it was incredible,” he said.
