Despite the tremendous attempts by the All Progressives Congress to broker smooth peace flowing sole candidature for the senate presidency representatives of the party in the eighth Assembly, it appears the party may have failed to resolve her lingering crisis.
Just as the House of Representatives Speaker primaries of the APC ended in controversy on Saturday June 6, 2015, the gathering of the the national working committee members of the party and her senators also ended in a controversial circumstances.
Following a primary election conducted by the party, the National Secretary of the Party, Mala Buni, who served as returning officer announced that 33 Senators were accredited to vote after which Lawan got 32 votes and one vote was declared invalid.
But this move has not gone down well with the opposition contender Saraki and his followers, who were reported to have boycotted the primaries. This lingering crisis tearing the party apart may have further enhanced the beliefs of the Peoples Democratic to retain the senate presidency slot.
We reported few days ago that the senate president of the seventh National Assembly, Senator David Mark, was favourite to retain his position and emerge as the Senate President of the eighth National Assembly; this report has further be strengthened again by the lingering discord that went unresolved at the APC primaries.
Though the APC has 59 senators with the #PDP left with 49 senators, the odds of PDP winning the senate presidency elections on Tuesday June 9, 2015 has now soared up immensely. The PDP will be voting for her candidate and with the discord in the camp of the ruling APC, getting ten members to align with the PDP is something that it not completely impossible.
As it stands now, the leadership of the PDP must be watching keenly at the developments within the camp of the APC and hoping that they emerge a surprise winner come next Tuesday.
The latest twist in the race for who emerge president of the Senate may not have been the last.
