#President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday June 9, 2015 arranged a meeting with the leadership of the #All Progressives Congress and the party’s senators-elect in order to resolve the lingering crisis, arising from the tussle for the key positions in the National Assembly.
But, while fifty-one senators of the party reported at the International Conference Centre, which was meant to be the venue of the peace meeting, #President #Buhari shunned the meeting entirely. Details have now emerged on the reasons behind the president’s failure to be present at a meeting he had arranged.
Speaking on the issue during a programme on Channels Television, Sunrise Daily, on Tuesday, The #Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, #Garba Shehu, explained that the twist in the National Assembly affected the decision of the president.
Shehu said Buhari did not bother attending the meeting with the 51 #APC senators at the International Conference Centre because Saraki had emerged Senate President before the meeting could even hold, The Punch reported.
He said, “President Buhari had planned to be there (at the meeting) to show support for the party but once the process had begun, the point had been lost.
Meanwhile, Shehu maintained that Saraki was always going to be favourite to win the senate presidency even if the inauguration of the Eighth National Assembly had been postponed. This was as a result of the last minute alliance between the camp of Saraki and the #Peoples Democratic Party senators.
Shehu said Saraki might still have emerged the Senate President but the inauguration of the Senate should have been delayed out of respect for the President. He said the APC senators showed respect for the President by showing up for the meeting and did not err by doing so.
He said, “They chose to be absent. They chose to respect their party and the President. Fifty APC senators decided to answer the call of the party and the President and were present at this meeting. It was not as if it was a secret meeting.”
